A London landmark restored with grace and intent
A transformation that returns a historic Chelsea townhouse to its former character and charm.
The Cadogan has long been woven into London’s cultural history. Once frequented by Lillie Langtry and remembered for Oscar Wilde’s arrest in room 118, the building carries a rich narrative that spans more than a century. GA Design’s renovation brings this history forward, restoring original details while introducing a contemporary elegance that feels natural to the spirit of the hotel.
Public areas, guestrooms and suites were reimagined with the character of a grand townhouse in mind. Architectural bones were revealed and refined through careful research and sensitive restoration, allowing the hotel to feel both renewed and connected to its past.
Approach
GA Design sought to honour the hotel’s heritage without reverting to nostalgia. The design approach combined historic detail with modern clarity, resulting in interiors that are layered, warm and quietly sophisticated. A new grand wooden staircase sweeps through the lobby, guiding guests towards the tea lounge and creating a focal point filled with light and movement.
Art plays a central role. More than 400 pieces, primarily by British female artists, form a curated collection that brings personality and cultural depth to the rooms and public spaces. Bespoke craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the hand-carved reception desk to joinery and finishes that reference Chelsea’s artistic heritage.
Guestrooms take inspiration from Sir Hans Sloane, the naturalist and collector after whom Sloane Street is named. Organic forms, raw timber and cast bronze elements subtly echo his fascination with nature and objects of curiosity.
The project re-establishes The Cadogan as a refined Chelsea address with a clear identity rooted in its history. The interiors now feel coherent, warm and timeless, offering a luxury experience that respects the building’s heritage while meeting contemporary expectations. The design allows guests to connect with the stories that shaped the hotel, giving the property renewed relevance within London’s competitive hospitality landscape.
The Royal Suite
The suites build on the simplicity of the guestrooms with greater depth and richness. In the Royal Suite, painted panelling gives way to grasscloth wallcoverings for added texture and atmosphere. A moodier, more masculine palette of rusts and reds provides contrast to the lighter Lillie Langtry-inspired penthouse.
